Safety Precautions When Loading a Tractor on A Trailer

The first thing you do before loading a tractor is to ensure that it’s safe and everyone is protected. Loading a tractor and securing it safely requires knowledge of the trailer, the tractor, the ramps, the securement system, and the environment around you. The trailer has to be secured not to roll during loading, the tractor’s size and weight has to be accurate not exceed the trailer’s loading capacity, and the ramps have to be in good shape, secured and on a firm ground strong enough to hold the weight of the tractor.

Loading a tractor is an important task, but for a smooth and efficient delivery, it has to be done right and safely. Tractors are heavy machines, and there is no shortcut to loading them beside following the company’s procedure. Here are some of the precautions to ensure everyone’s is protected.

  • Before moving the tuck, communicate with the rest of the crew and other workers.
  • Nonessential personnel should stay at a safe distance.
  • Walk around the truck and conduct a vision inspection.
  • Ensure that the ground is firm enough to support the weight of the tractor and loaded trailer.
  • Always use a reliable guide when loading the trailer.
  • Tie-down the tractor as indicated in the securement manual.
  • Never pull away before ascertaining that the load is adequately secured, the loading process is fully completed, and the trailer is vacated.

How to Load a Tractor on a Trailer

The very first step is to park the truck in a place with enough space, but you have to ensure the ground can support the weight of the loaded trailer. The ramps must also be positioned on stable ground. Keeping the above in mind, the only thing left before riding the tractor onto the bed of the trailer is pulling out the outriggers if the tractor width is greater than 8.5 ft. The next step is to set up the ramp, and you will be ready to load the tractor.

Before revving up the tractor on the ramps, ensure the parking brakes of your truck are set, and the trailer is adequately lit. Secure the ramps to the truck’s hitch mechanism to make sure they don’t slide out while the tractor is on the ramp. Depending with the size and model of the tractor, you can either back it onto the trailer or drive it forward up the ramps. It is advisable to drive all the way up the ramps, if for any reason you stop midway, let the tractor roll slowly to the ground and start the process again.

The final step is to kill the tractor’s engine, set the parking brakes, cut off its fuel supply, unscrew the battery connectors, secure the tractor with tie-downs straps and tarp it if necessary. The tie-downs depend on the size and model of the tractor. Remember to check on the condition of the straps as well as their working load limits. Since your tie-down system is as strong as the weakest component, only use quality straps and factor in the weight distribution of the tractor as you secure it from all directions.
